Digital Editing
Photography Special Project

This is my special project for the photography class I'm taking this semester. It involves taking digital photographs and tweaking them to make them look better, different, or odd. I've included fairly detailed explanations on the steps I took to manipulate each image, so feel free to read along, or just look at the before and after comparisons.

All pictures are thumbnails. Click on them if you want to see a bigger and better picture, under 1M.

This photograph looked pretty good to begin with, but I wanted to do something different to it. I decided to desaturate my sister, but leave the candle in color. It would have taken seconds to desaturate Alyssa and then leave the picture, but I wanted the candle to be reflecting off her cheek.
Instead of selecting the region I wanted to desaturate, I took the left 2/3 of the picture, then desaturated the general area that I wanted to be black and white.

Notice how flat the candle-side of her face is with the desaturation. By having the candle reflect orange light off her cheek, this problem was rememdied.
Next, I took the right 2/3 of the picture, left it alone, but merged the two together to give her face more dimension on the side nearest the candle. This was much more difficult than I had orignally planned, but with much trial and error, I achieved the right results.
After that, I had to do some touch-up around the left edge of the candle and around her face, and the photograph is completed!
