Winter Carnival 2001

This is how a hall of 41 guys (and a few honorary members) can do some massive construction with snow, turning a normal piece of Houghton lawn into a work of art in 14 hours.

Odysseus Braves Poseidon's Wintery Waves was the title of this year's statue for the theme Greek Myths Unfold in a Wondrous Land of Cold.

We actually started construction some time around 5:00 pm Wendesday, February 7th. Our site had been used by plow trucks to shove all the dirty snow from the nearby sidewalk.

We worked very steadily from that time on, and except for a 20 minute pizza break at about 10:20, there were always at least 5 people working on the statue at one time.

With the occasional break, of course...

...Dennis.

We used everything we could find to make the statue--sleds, odd ice formations, and even a 5 gallon bucket for Poseidon's head.

The finishing touches were added around 6:30 am.

The last scoop of snow, Joe finishes the raging sea.

With only the letters left to put on, the statue stands ready for the judging.
