Close Calls

Baby boys are commonly known to prefer the open air to a diaper when it comes to relieving themselves. Titus is no exception. In fact, in the mere 11 days since he was born, he has managed to directly or indirectly pee on me 5 different times already. Here are the details:
1. There are a number of things the nurses watch for in a newborn to verify that everything is working correctly, including the state of the baby’s diaper. They are told to be concerned if a newborn goes 24 hours without a wet diaper. At 25 hours (6:00 Saturday morning), the nurse asked me to take Titus’s diaper off to see if he would prefer the “open air”. Sho ’nuff, less than a minute later I felt a rush of water that could possibly be compared to Niagara Falls! He soaked every blanket in the bottom half of his bassinet, and managed to make me more than a little damp with the side-spray!

2. Of course, I didn’t learn much from that hospital incident. Within a couple of days of being home, he managed to hit the changing table, wall, car seat, floor, and me again…all in one shot!

3. By that time, I may not have gotten any smarter, but I did get quicker. A day later, he was laying on the changing table again, and I saw him getting ready to go. I managed to “divert” the stream into a new diaper (pretty proud of that), and kept pretty much everything (except myself) clean.

4. Of course, Titus realized that I was getting better at this, so he decided to target Sarah next. She was relatively quick for a first-timer, but I still managed to get hit…plus there wasn’t a diaper underneath him when he started, so he pretty much needed a bath after that one.

5. Yesterday was my first day back at work, so I got home and held the little guy. While I was holding him (slightly inverted), he managed to shoot a large quantity of liquid (thank goodness it wasn’t solid) out the back of his diaper, all over my dress shirt and pants!

I’m not sure if I’m just a little slow or what, but I’m almost tempted to figure out an alternative method of diaper-changing…even though it is a bit of a thrill to run for cover every time he needs to be changed!

Baby-tested to Exacting Specifications

Well I have about a million different things I could blog about, but I just felt like making a quick little post about being a dad. I’m sitting here with my baby in one arm (This is a completely right-handed post, by the way), spit-up running down the front of my shirt, and tired enough to fall asleep right on the spot…

…having just finished a day where I cheered for every wet and dirty diaper (yes, even the ones I had to change myself), and I’m very happy.

I don’t really understand what all goes into this fatherhood thing, but I’m really looking forward to every day I get to try and wedge his tiny squirming self into another oddly-shaped article of clothing!

Titus Anders Fredman

169

On June 2nd, at 4:56 am, we welcomed Titus Anders Fredman into this world!

Weight: 11 lb 7 oz

Height: 23″

Titus is doing fine, especially since his mom and dad spent all night the past 2 nights rocking and walking with him. His mom and dad are doing well too, but don’t expect much in the way of intelligent conversation from us for the next couple of weeks, or at least until we figure out how to care for a newborn baby and get sleep at the same time!

We made it home today around 11:00, and it feels good to be out of the hospital, both for our own sanity and to be able to show the little guy his new home.

There are a handful more pictures in the gallery, with more soon to follow.

May 31st — Due Date

Well, as Amy mentioned, May 31st has come and almost gone, with no new births in the Fredman household. Actually, Sarah had a doctor appointment today, and he said that she is progressing a little (for the first time in 3-4 weeks). The baby’s heartrate was at 130, the lowest it’s been at any appointment, but that’s normal as we get into the delivery timeframe. Last week it was up around 150, but the doctor figured it was because she “pinched his head”. I don’t know about these doctors…

Speaking of doctors, we’re on our third in as many weeks, and they are a bit confusing. One doctor says that she wants to monitor heartbeat, potential contractions, and movements, as well as changing to twice-a-week appointments, while another doctor says that as long as Sarah is getting the right kick count numbers, she can stick with the once a week appointments.

Oh well, I guess that just goes to show that everyone’s a little different–from the doctors that treat us to the babies that are birthed–whether they want to come out before the due date, on time, or after!
